Slow cooker woes

Well, two weeks ago my beloved Crock Pot died. I had everything ready to go for a great batch of chicken broth, but after much prodding of buttons and outlet-changing, I discovered it had given up the ghost. Alas. So the hunt promptly began for a new one, and wow there are many choices!

I use it frequently, so I wanted one that is lead-free, but also aluminum-free. After quite a bit of reading around, I found that Crock Pot brand does not use lead in their crockery glaze (thank goodness, though apparently trace amounts are allowed and sometimes still used in food-grade ceramic glazes, which astounds me). From other reading, it seems the jury is still out on whether cooking in aluminum is bad for you, so although I found a great-looking slow cooker with an aluminum insert, I thought “better safe than sorry”.

The maiden voyage for my new Crock Pot (I got the 6-quart programmable cook and carry with locking lid) was of course chicken broth. So far I’m liking it as much as the first one, and I hope to be able to leave this post alone in the future and not have to add a note about something negative.
